Swayambhunath Stupa
Swayambhu, Kathmandu
About
Overview
Swayambhunath is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley. The Swayambhunath complex consists of a stupa, a variety of shrines and temples, some dating back to the Licchavi period. Although the site is considered Buddhist, it is revered by both Buddhists and Hindus, and the site has many Hindu deities incorporated into it. The stupa's massive mandala makes it one of the most recognizable symbols of Nepal.
